Analysis of financial data of mergers and acquisitions proves that their volume and value fluctuate in a rather cyclic manner. This phenomenon has been a subject of research for many years, trying to determine its causes and characteristic traits and finding other regularities. The aim of the article is to present merger waves in the world, point out its determinants as well as present forming of this phenomenon in Poland.
